According to MGL 110:5, any person conducting business in the Commonwealth under any title other than the real name of the person conducting the business is required to register their business with the Town. Filing a DBA (Doing Business As) certificate costs $20.00 and the certificate is good for four years. Forms are available from the Town Clerk's Office and all signatures on the form must be notarized or witnessed by the Town Clerk's Office.
THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN OPENING A BUSINESS IN CHATHAM:

1.) Applied for a DBA? Required if your full name is not in the name of the business or if you are doing business under a name other than your exact corporate business name.
2.) Applied for a Business Registration form? (Available at the Annex).
3.) Applied for a Transient Vendor License? (Required if you are not open for business prior to January 1 and sell merchandise). Applications are available from the Town Clerk.
4.) Applied for a sign at the Building Department? (508) 945-5160.
5.) Checked with the Planning Department and verified that your business is located in a business-zoned area? (508) 945-5168.
6.) Contacted the Department of Revenue (State Sales Tax Division) at 1-800-392-6089 or www.dor.state.ma.us.
7.) Contacted the Internal Revenue Service (Employer ID numbers, etc.) at 1-800-829-1040 or www.irs.gov.
